The charm of Provence choose to go to La Camargue, or visit Marseille with its creeks, or the resorts of Var, or go up into the scented hills... Escape from the overcrowded places such as Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer and take the Cacharel road in the direction of Pioch Badet, admiring the beauty of the surrounding countryside. In Arles, stroll along the nostalgic Alyscamps; and in Roussillon, nicknamed “Red Delphi” by Jean Vilar, you will be enthralled by the blaze of the setting sun. Don't miss Avignon with its Vieux Sextier street, nor Aix-en-Provence, and take a drive along the Mirabeau to Jas-de-Bouffon where you can imagine Cézanne behind his Shepard's hut. You must also take time for the beauties hidden behind the coast. Leaving from Orange, head for Carpentras tucked behind its walls, then Gordes where the castle is decorated with canvases and drawings by Vaserely, or Apt, which is famed for its crystallized fruits and its wickerwork. Other possible destinations are Manosque, dear to Giono, and Draguignan for the pleasure of discovering the out-lying places. Don't forget the Abbey at Thoronet in the south, the Verdon gorges in the north and the hills overlooking Nice, where once again you have to choose between the Vésubie valley and the Tinée valley, known for its “Pénitents blancs.” Meanwhile the more adventurous types will head off for the Roya and Merveilles valleys.
