Bathed by the ocean, Poitou-Charentes is the sunniest region in the west of France with beaches of fine sand. But it also offers the possibility of time travel: both back to Roman times and forward to Futuroscope... The town of Royan began the fashion of sun-bathing as early as the 19th century. Today its five beaches, all protected from the western winds, continue to attract those in search of sun, sand and sea. Nearby are St-Georges de Didone and Saint-Palais, surrounded by pine and oak trees. Meschers is tucked between two cliffs facing onto the Gironde estuary, and further to the north are Fouras, Châtelaillon and La Palmyre. Swimming is possible all along this coast with its homely resorts where fisherman, sporty types and those who prefer to build sand-castles rub shoulders. Out to sea are the islands of Ré, Aix and Oléron with their endless beaches, their luminous skies and their southern vegetation. You should get around the island of Ré on a bicycle as this will allow you to spot the herons and barnacle geese nesting in the breakwaters and marshes filled with saltwort. On Oléron you can visit the oyster farmers' huts to try the famous Marennes-Oléron oysters, which owe their particular green colour to a small seaweed known as the blue navicelle. And from the little island of Aix you will bring back a memory of narrow roads with no cars and the bloom of clambering roses. Not far off lies the fort Boyard…
