Picardy know how to enjoy itself while also celebrating history in its own special way with historical reconstructions, the bonfires of Saint John's night, the flower festival, fireworks and horse racing at Chantilly. Whether you be a glutton or a gastronome, each of your stopping-places will bring you lots of surprises: duck pâté in Amiens, cheese tart in the Thiérache area, seafood of all sorts in the Somme estuary, rissoles in Laon, sweet fritters in Saint-Quentin, red fruits in Noyon and, of course, whipped cream in Chantilly… Use a small boat known as a “bateau à cornet” to navigate through the Amiens Hortillonages. Watch the thousands of birds that populate both the Somme estuary and the nature reserve of the Cessières marshes. The green expanses of Picardy also offer many a possibility for fun and sport: riding in a carriage, golfing, walking, biking, fishing, hunting and, of course, horse riding. The kings of Picardy are its equestrian population. Indeed Chantilly is the capital of French equestrian sports as well as boasting a Live Horse “Museum.” When you see the riding tracks in the Compiègne area, the prestigious race courses, the equestrian and the thoroughbred training centres, you will understand why the region is so proud of its horses, particularly so of its very own “Henson”, 100% Picardy-bred.
