Water upon water ! More than 400 kms of navigable rivers. Whether in a barge, fishing boat or a “foigouille,” you can go floating down the Mayenne, the Maine, the Sarthe and the Oudon... not forgetting the Erdre whose banks are lined with manor houses and fairy-tale homes such as the “folies Sifflait,” charming in its eccentricity with its trompe l'oeil summer houses and its staircases that lead nowhere. And, of course, the Loire, to be explored in a “gabare,” which is a flat-bottomed boat with square sails that dates back to the 19th century. To the west of Nantes is the mysterious Brière district, with its peat marshlands and its canals stretching over 50 000 acres. Again this area can be visited by boat from Trignac or St-Liphard. In this haven of bearded tits and coots you must visit the “Maison de L'Eclusier” and especially the little village of Kerhinet, whose reed- and bulrush-tatched cottages give it a fairy-tale air. On the other bank of the river, the Grand-Lieu lake, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Europe, is home to little white herons and crested ducks and is covered in water lilies in July. Further south the Poitevin marshes, with their small meadows criss-crossed by canals, also attract migratory animals, birds and tourists who delight in the promises of “green Venise.”
