The majestic Rodez cathedral rises up against the blue sky and mountains. The impressive Pic du Midi calmly surveys the surrounding countryside like a final outpost on the crest of the Pyrenean massif. This natural barrier, stretching from Catalan Canigou to the Béarn mountains, can be seen from Puylaurens, an ancient Tarn village. Let the spell filter through you as you gaze at a simple sheepcote in the sombre Aubrac mountains or the excitement catch you in the ancient Quercy region when, on a summer night, it is as if Henry Plantagenet was riding out to Rocamadour once again. This region is steeped in history: fortified villages, such as Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a Lot citadel, cling to the sides of valleys; untouched nature in Aveyron; the Albi cathedral watching over the Cathar country; Foix, in the Ariège of Gaston Phoebus who made it the most feared town in the Midi; the Bigorre region, a land of proud and rebellious mountain-dwellers; Gascony, once highly coveted by a King of England who proved to be even more Gascon than “his cousin” King of France.
