In the hills of the Limousin region numerous fortresses remind us of the rivalries, between the kings of France, the kings of England and the Dukes of Burgundy. From the ruins of Châlus castle where Richard the Lionheart met his end, to those of Oradour-sur-Glane, marked by martyrdom in the Second World War, History has left an impact on the region.
The châteaux of the past pepper the roads of Richard the Lionheart and of Ventadour. You will also be drawn to the historic atmosphere of the medieval villages of Collonges-la Rouge, Turenne, Curemonte in the Corrèze department and Mortemart in the department of Haut-Vienne.
Enamel, porcelain and Limousin weaving have acquired a world-wide reputation. In the Museum of the Bishopric you can admire the refinement of the enamel colourings, while in the Adrien Dubouché Museum you can view the elegance of the porcelain decorated by Cocteau, Renoir or Dufy… Visit the departmental museum at Aubusson if you want to know everything about the art of tapestry, which was imported from Flanders in the 14th century and brought back to life in the 1930ís by Luçat. In Eymoutiers, in the Haut-Vienne department, visit the Espace Paul Rebeyolle, named after the famous painter born in the area, which shows that contemporary art also has an important place in the region.
