Every summer since time immemorial the shepherds have crossed Lozčre with their flocks, sculpting the form of the land from the grassy plains of Aubrac to the forests and rivers of the Margeride. The importance of ecology becomes real in these protected areas which are home to many endangered species and centres for re-introduction programmes. Wolves and bison now flourish again here under close supervision and you can observe them without danger.
The Cévennes were quite inaccessible for a long time and have preserved all their authenticity. They promise a surprise or two for the visitor, from silk-worm cultivation to hamlets dotted with shale roofs, from chestnut groves to the astonishing bamboo at Prafrance. Then there are the gorges at Tarn which you can descend in a boat or a canoe. They will take you through the breath-taking landscapes of sheer banks and broken corniches known as the “canyons.”
The Gard is the meeting-point between the Cévennes and Provence, and its richness comes from the alliance between its Roman past and the shifting lands, part water, part land, of the sand and salt Camargue. All the colours of nature are blended together here: the pink splashes of the flamingos, the black of the bulls and the white of the horses…
